How to Apply
Department of Plant Pathology Graduate Program

Thank you for your interest in graduate study in Plant Pathology at Penn State. in order to complete the application process, you will need to complete the Application for Admission to Graduate School and pay the non refundable application fee. Application forms and fee amounts are provided on the Graduate School's How to Apply page.

For more information about the Graduate School's admission requirements and procedures, please visit the Graduate School Admissions and Program Information Portal.

Important: In addition to completing the Application for Admission to Graduate School, applicants must also submit the following documents directly to the Department of Plant Pathology:

  • Two copies of your official transcripts for all baccalaureate and post baccalaureate studies. Transcript Request Form
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (an original report of scores is required).
    • Applicants are required to have a GRE score. However, there are no minimum GRE scores.
  • Reference Reports on Applicant (three)

These recommendations are an important consideration in our decision. We encourage you to select individuals who will be able to provide a thorough evaluation of your potential as a scholar and researcher. The persons you choose to evaluate you should complete the "Reference Report on Applicant" form and submit it directly to:

  • Statement of Objectives Regarding Graduate Work

Please submit a one- to two-page statement of interest giving your reasons for choosing plant pathology as a career and your plans for the future. To the extent permitted by the present development of your plans, the statement should cover:

- what you consider to be your special needs and previous training
- your area of interest in the field of Plant Pathology
- the type of position you hope to obtain after graduate work is completed

The Department awards graduate assistantships, when available, on a merit basis. The current academic year (i.e., fall and spring semesters or August - May) stipend for one-half time graduate assistantships is $14,625.00 for M.S. and beginning Ph.D. students is $15,705.00, with additional support possible through the summer. These assistantships also include a grant-in-aid to cover tuition costs.
